Job Search Assistance Workshops

Resumes that Get Results
In this workshop you will learn the essentials of resume writing, including what headings to use, why you should have a career summary instead of an objective, how to write effective job descriptions, and accomplishment statements, and your education information. By the end of the session you will be well on your way to completing the first draft of your resume. 

Resume Writing
This workshop will focus on creating and editing a resume using the Winway Resume software as well as exploring other features available in this software program including saving to Microsoft Word. 

Applications Plus
Learn how to avoid some common mistakes when completing employment applications and how to present yourself in the best light to give a great first impression to an employer. 

Job Club
Job club is a networking event that helps job seekers obtain information on employment opportunities, interviewing tips, and accessing the unadvertised job market in a tough economic environment. Assistance in updating resumes and developing employment portfolios will also be available.

Employment Applications
In this session you will learn how to correctly complete online applications, paper applications, and how to apply for jobs via email and mail.

Resume Development Workshop
Learn to develop a resume that will attract immediate attention from employers; determine which resume format will work best for your, what to include and what to leave off.

Tips for Job Seekers
A brief preview of the classes available, tips on resume writing, interviewing, etc. and assistance in choosing the classes or services that will be most helpful to you in your job search.

Job Search Letters
Learn to write attention-getting cover letters to mail with your resumes, marketing letters that target possible opportunities, and follow-up letters after interviews.

Labor Market Information
Learn about current and projected local job market trends and prevailing wages by exploring several key Internet sites. Basic Internet knowledge required.

Interviewing Skills
What do I wear? What do I say? What does this employer really want from me? How can I be less nervous? All of these are common questions people have prior to a job interview. This session is designed to help people feel more comfortable with the interview process. Participants will learn how to prepare for a job interview, how to answer the toughest and most common interview questions, and how to follow up after an interview.

Computer Basics for Resume Writers
This class is designed for individuals with limited computer skills who will be attending Tri-C’s resume writing workshops. Upon completion, participants will be able to type and format resumes from beginning to end.

Interviewing Techniques
Learn what employers are looking for when interviewing, how to prepare for the interview, how to answer tough interview questions, what questions you should ask, and how to follow up after the interview. This is a two-day workshop; you must attend both days.

Career Assessment
A series of assessments to help you identify your work values, interests, and strengths. Learn how to use your career assessment information to determine a career path that will make you both happy and successful.

Career Assessment Inventory
SIGI3, pronounced “siggy three” – (System of Interactive Guidance and Information) is an advanced education and career planning system. It is an online Career Assessment tool designed to help you plan your career. It combines the unique capabilities of the Internet with thoroughly researched information about occupations, work-related values, interests, skills, educational programs, and more. It can save you literally days of leafing through catalogs and career books, and because its built-in library is so large, it may find career options you never knew existed.

Career Workshop
Learn to assess and communicate your skills; determine the skills needed for your career interests; identify career options and goals; and develop an employment plan. Course is followed by individual meetings with a career manager to assist with your plan. You will be notified of your eligibility for the Career Workshop within seven days of submitting all of your information. At that time, a staff member will contact you to schedule a start date.

Networking Workshop
Learn how the people you know can help you in your job search and how to expand a network of contacts. Pointers on who to call, how to present yourself, and how to gain valuable information on current trends, industries and available positions.

Interpersonal Communications
Learn essential skills to be a better listener and communicator, both in your job search and on the job.

Job Retention Strategies Workshop
Learn to clarify the details of the job offer. Prepare yourself for the first days on a new job and how to make a good first impression.

Targeting Workshop
Learn techniques to research and contact specific industries, companies and geographical location; prepare an action plan to target the right job for you.

PROES Workshop
PROES is a statewide pilot re-entry program designed to increase public safety and reduce the rate of recidivism by utilizing intensive life management and job readiness skills training. This workshop provides a holistic approach to bringing services and training to individuals in a One-Stop environment. The program provides a comprehensive service delivery system focused on immediate employment and support services integration.

Practice Interviewing
Pick a want ad to interview for, dress up and participate in a mock interview session. Instructors videotape practice interviews and provide tips to help you improve your interviewing techniques.

Telephone Techniques Workshop
Learn how to use the telephone as an effective tool in your job search. Focus on how to introduce yourself, ask for information, handle follow up discussion, overcome objections, and close the call.

Ex-Offender Elective
This workshop builds off of what is taught in our Career Workshop and focuses on tailoring resume writing and interviewing techniques to our members with a criminal background. Also provides information on government backed incentives that are available to employers who hire ex-offenders.

Mock Interviewing Workshop
This workshop allows you to practice all the techniques acquired through our Career Workshop and Interviewing Technique Workshop. If you are looking for the an opportunity to get feedback from a professional from the business community, this may be the venue for you. Must have an up to date resume.

Introduction to Computers
Introduces computer hardware and software. Designed for individuals with limited experience on computers.

Computer Basics (Lab)
This lab is designed to introduce beginning computer users on how to manage the mouse and basic keyboarding. Members will be provided with individualized assistance on the computers.

Email Lab
This lab will help you create a free Email address and practice using it.

Data Entry
Learn to enter and update data correctly and efficiently; edit data and find records; write simple queries and generate reports.

Basic Computer Workshop
This course is designed to teach computer skills necessary to conduct an effective job search. Topics covered include: hardware, software, operating systems, mouse techniques, keyboard shortcuts, creating and saving folders and documents. The workshop will also cover setting up email accounts, how to search job related web sites and creating and sending email attachments.

Introduction to the Internet
Learn to use the Internet in your job search: create an email account, attach documents to a message, post your resume on job search sites, and more.

Intermediate Computer Workshop
This course follows up on the basic skills learned in the Basic Computer Workshop. The emphasis is on word processing using Microsoft Word. Topics covered include: toolbar icons, page setup, text and paragraph formatting, bullets and numbering. Workshop also covers some basic information on spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel and database basics using Microsoft Access.

Introduction to Word 2003
Learn basic word processing skills to create, edit and print documents, set up pages, create tables, apply borders and shading, use headers, footers and tabs.

Intermediate Word 2003
Learn advanced word processing features including merge, templates, macros, styles, advanced tables, outlining, sort, columns and graphics.

Introduction to Excel 2003
Learn to enter data, edit, format and apply spreadsheet features; set up pages, headers and footers; use basic formulas and features; and create and edit basic charts.

Intermediate Excel 2003
Introduction to data lists and tables. Field criteria and record characteristics for aggregate functions. Pivot table, subtotals, sorting and auto-filter are applied to workplace scenarios.

Introduction to PowerPoint 2003
Learn to create professional presentations, handouts and graphics; include artwork, graphs, flow charts and organizational charts; design and run animated slide presentations.

 

Adult Literacy Services

 

ABLE/GED
Adult Basic Literacy Education and the GED preparation classes help improve reading and math skills or earn a high school equivalency.

ESOL - English for Work I
If English is not your native language, the English for Speakers of Other Languages classes will help you learn the basic vocabulary and communication skills needed for the workplace.

Educational Enhancement
Building your educational foundation at Cuyahoga Community College is easy, start by taking the Official GED practice test. ABLE/GED/ESOL preparation classes and GED examination are available (appropriate documentation required).

Financial Aid Workshop
A two-hour workshop designed for individuals 19 years or older interested in obtaining financial aid to enroll in college classes or complete a 2 or 4-year degree program. Attendees will learn what forms of financial aid are available, how to search for scholarships, and will receive hands-on assistance in completing the federal financial aid applications.
